Overview:

Visit the old town of Chefchaouen, a real blue labyrinth.

Chefchaouen is a small charming town of about 40,000 inhabitants located in the north-east of Morocco in the heart of the Rif Mountains, near the Mediterranean Sea. Chefchaouen is a delight for tourists, not only for its affordable rates, but especially for its picturesque old town (Medina) lined with whitewashed houses covered with a very distinctive blue color.

Chefchaouen was painted blue by the Jewish refugees who lived there during the 1930s, recalling the blue of heaven and paradise. The beauty of the mountain landscape of Chefchaouen is reinforced by the contrast of the bright colors of the medina (the old town). It is the beauty and relaxed atmosphere of the city that makes Chefchaouen a very attractive place for visitors. The main square of the medina is lined with cafes and filled to the brim with a crowd that mixes local and tourist alike.

– Kasbah museum : The kasbah of Chefchaouen was built by Moulay Ali Ben Rachid Sherif in 1471 and it constitutes a perfect blend of a very great architectural homogeneity and it was adapted to defend the city first from the Portuguese, then of the rebels from the Berbers tribes and finally from the Spanish invasions.

– Talassemtane National Park: Covering an area of 64,000 hectares, this national park covers impressive mountains and beautiful forests. It encompasses deep valleys, gorges with impressive cliffs and abundant caves as well as rare plant and animal species.

– Outa el Hammam : This historical monument is the oldest square in the city and it witnesses a period of splendor of the city’s history in particular and Morocco’s in general.

Itinerary:

Almost all the points of interest of Chefchaouen are located in the medina.

The medina is quite small and the alleys are unique, colorful and pleasant to walk around. Unlike the other overload Medinas such those in Marrakech or Fez, in the Medina of Chefchaouen you can walk calmly, and enjoy its pace with no disturbance of mopeds or donkeys loaded with skins!

You will therefore be able to discover freely most of the streets of the medina of Chefchaouen.

The key point to start with is the place Uta el-Hammam, the Medina heartbeat; on this square discover the 15th century Grand Mosque and the famous kasbah museum surrounded by beautiful gardens and houses a variety of antique weapons and musical instruments…that date back to the early 18th century.

To the north east, on the edge of the medina, you find the Ras el Ma where you can see women washing their clothes, in the old fashioned way. Very calm, and with nice little coffees, at the edge of the water!

Finally, every corner of the medina offers a magical view of the alleys of the city or the mountains surrounding the medina. Visit Chefchaouen is also to take time and soak up the way of life of the inhabitants of Chefchaouen, very different from the hectic rhythm of Morocco’s big cities!
